How to Connect DSTV Extra View: Dish, Cables and Decoder Setup
7 October 2026
Adding Extra View to your DSTV subscription sounds simple: you get a second decoder and watch different channels in another room. But the connection side is where most home setups go wrong. If you've already read how Extra View works, this guide covers what's physically involved and why the second TV sometimes shows "no signal".
DSTV's requirements can vary by decoder model and over time, so treat this as a practical overview and confirm the specifics for your decoders with MultiChoice or your installer.
What You Need
- A main decoder with an active DSTV subscription.
- Extra View added to your account with MultiChoice, which links the second decoder to your subscription.
- A second decoder for the additional TV. It is registered to your account and set up as part of Extra View.
- A dish and LNB that can feed both decoders. This is the part people miss, and it's explained below.
- A separate satellite cable run for each decoder, from the dish to each room.
Why Each Decoder Needs Its Own Cable
A satellite decoder doesn't just receive whatever signal arrives. It tells the LNB which part of the signal it wants, and it can ask for something different from a second decoder at the same moment. Two decoders watching two different channels need to make independent requests.
That's why the usual advice is:
- Use a multi-output LNB (for example a twin or quad LNB) so each decoder gets its own output at the dish.
- Run one cable per decoder from the LNB to each room.
- Don't join two decoders to one cable with an ordinary splitter. A simple splitter shares one feed, so the decoders interfere with each other. A common symptom is one TV working while the other shows no signal, or both TVs glitching when someone changes channel.
A single-output LNB, which is common on older single-decoder installations, can't feed two decoders. If your home was originally set up for one decoder, the dish usually needs a new LNB, and sometimes a second cable run, before Extra View will work.
The Basic Connection
- The main decoder connects to one LNB output with its own cable.
- The Extra View decoder connects to a different LNB output with a separate cable.
- Each decoder connects to its own TV, usually by HDMI.
- Both decoders are powered up and the Extra View decoder is activated against your account.
For homes with long cable runs, several rooms, or more than two decoders, an installer may use a multiswitch to distribute the signal cleanly.
Common Problems and What They Usually Mean
The second TV shows "no signal". The most common causes are a splitter on a single cable, a single-output LNB, or the second cable plugged into the wrong LNB output or the wrong input at the decoder.
The Extra View decoder won't activate. This is usually an account or registration issue rather than a wiring one, so check it with MultiChoice.
One TV works until the other is switched on. This points to the two decoders sharing a cable or an output.
Picture breakup on both TVs. Poor dish alignment, a weak cable or a faulty LNB affects every decoder it feeds. See our guide on fixing a no-signal error.
Running Cable Through Your Home
A tidy Extra View installation usually means a second cable hidden through the ceiling, wall or conduit to the other room, rather than a visible cable along the outside of the house. In an established home this is often the part that takes the most time. In a new build, it's much easier to have extra cabling run before the walls are closed, so it's worth asking about at the planning stage.
Do I Need an Installer?
Some households with a suitable dish and an easy cable route manage the physical connection themselves. If your dish only has a single-output LNB, the second room is far from the dish, or you can't tell what you have, a professional install is usually quicker and avoids the "second TV has no signal" problem later. Never climb onto the roof to check the dish.
